Communication faults can be in the module, the cable or the network configuration. The module is tested on a live link after repair; the cabling and terminations at site are worth checking too.

What to check before calling an engineer
Isolate and lock out the supply, and wait for stored energy to discharge, before opening anything.

- Note the exact fault code and what the machine was doing when it tripped.
- Check that fans turn and that filters and heatsink fins are clear.
- Measure the incoming supply on all three phases.
- With the motor cable disconnected from the drive, have the motor insulation tested.

- Opening the drive or testing the power stage: the DC bus holds a lethal charge after switch-off.
- Replacing IGBT modules, capacitors or gate drivers.
- Reforming capacitors on a drive that has been in storage.
