Motor Overheating

A motor that runs hot, smells hot or keeps tripping its overload is telling you about a load, cooling, supply or winding problem — and running it anyway shortens its life fast. Overheating is a symptom with a handful of well-understood causes that a proper onsite check will separate.

We diagnose the motor, its drive/starter and its load together, because an overheating motor is very often a drive-parameter or mechanical-load problem rather than a motor fault.

Overload / mechanical binding

Worn bearings, misalignment, a seized driven load or over-tight belts make the motor draw more current and heat up. The overload relay is doing its job — the load is the problem.

Cooling blocked

A clogged fan cowl, blocked cooling fins or a failed cooling fan — extremely common in dusty Hyderabad plant — lets an otherwise-healthy motor overheat at normal load.

Supply problem

Voltage imbalance, single-phasing or under-voltage forces higher current for the same torque, heating the windings. We check supply quality at the motor terminals.

Drive / parameter issue

Wrong V/f or motor-nameplate parameters, an incorrect current limit, or excessive switching frequency in the VFD makes a motor run hot even at light load.

Winding insulation breakdown

Aged or moisture-damaged insulation raises losses and leakage. A megger and insulation-resistance test tells us whether the motor itself is failing.

My motor keeps tripping the overload — should I just increase the setting?+
No. The overload is protecting the motor from real overcurrent; raising the setting hides the cause and risks burning the windings. We find why it's drawing high current — load, cooling, supply or parameters — and fix that instead.
The motor is hot but the load seems normal. What else could it be?+
Blocked cooling and supply imbalance are the usual culprits when the load is fine — a clogged fan cowl or a single-phasing supply will overheat a healthy motor. Wrong VFD parameters can do it too. We check cooling and supply quality at the terminals first.
