Why encoder calibration matters for servo accuracy, and how to diagnose and correct feedback faults on multi-axis machines.
Why Calibration Matters
The encoder is the servo loop's eyes. Drift, misalignment, or commutation errors cause positioning inaccuracy, following errors, and unexpected faults — especially on CNC and robotic axes.
Common Feedback Faults
Encoder faults show up as position errors, oscillation/hunting, or communication-loss alarms. Check cabling and shielding first — noise on feedback lines is a frequent culprit before the encoder itself.
Calibration Procedure
Perform commutation alignment per the drive's auto-tune routine, verify the electrical zero, and confirm counts-per-revolution match the configuration. Re-run a controlled move and check following error stays within tolerance.
