VFD Common Faults & Solutions: Complete Troubleshooting Guide

8 min read readJan 2026

Variable Frequency Drives are sophisticated power electronics that control motor speed and torque. Understand the most common faults, their causes, and how to diagnose and fix them fast.

Understanding VFD Faults

Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) are sophisticated power electronics that control motor speed and torque. While highly reliable, they can experience faults due to electrical issues, thermal stress, environmental factors, or component aging. Understanding common faults enables faster diagnosis and minimizes production downtime.

The most frequent trip conditions are overcurrent (OC), overvoltage (OV), undervoltage (UV), overtemperature (OH), ground fault (GF) and communication loss. Each fault code points to a specific subsystem — reading it correctly is the first step to a fast repair.

Overcurrent & Overvoltage

Overcurrent trips are usually caused by mechanical overload, short cycling, incorrect V/f settings, or a failing IGBT. Quick Test: Disconnect motor cables and test the drive with no load. If overcurrent persists, the fault is in the drive (IGBT failure). If it clears, the fault is external.

Overvoltage typically appears on decelerating high-inertia loads that regenerate energy back into the DC bus. Prevention: For regenerative applications (hoists, cranes, centrifuges), always specify drives with built-in braking circuits rated for 150% continuous duty, or add a properly sized braking resistor.

Preventive Maintenance Best Practices

Clean heatsinks and replace cooling fans on schedule, re-torque power terminals annually, and measure DC bus capacitor ESR to catch ageing before it causes nuisance trips. Keep drives in a clean, dry, ventilated enclosure and verify ambient temperature stays within rating.
