How to methodically diagnose a tripping or non-starting VFD in the field, minimizing downtime and avoiding unnecessary board swaps.
Capture the Fault Code
Never clear a fault before recording it. The active and historical fault codes, along with the drive's parameter set, tell you whether the problem is electrical, mechanical, thermal, or configuration-related.
No-Load Test
Disconnect the motor and run the drive unloaded. If it runs cleanly, the fault is downstream — motor, cable, or mechanical load. If it still trips, the fault is inside the drive (IGBT, gate driver, or control board).
Verify Parameters & Environment
Confirm V/f or vector settings match the motor nameplate, acceleration/deceleration ramps are realistic, and current limits are correct. Check ambient temperature, ventilation, and DC bus voltage — thermal and supply issues cause a large share of nuisance trips.
