Common faults
What usually fails on a unit like the 690
AC drives fail in a small number of predictable ways: the power stage, the DC link, cooling, or the control electronics. Most can be repaired at component level, which keeps the original drive, its parameters and its wiring in place.
Power stage failure
Shorted IGBTs or rectifier diodes, usually after a motor or cable fault, a supply surge or long-term overheating. The drive trips on overcurrent or short circuit at start, or blows input fuses.
DC bus capacitors
Electrolytic capacitors lose capacity with age and heat. Symptoms are DC bus ripple faults, undervoltage trips under load, or a drive that fails after a long shutdown.
Cooling fans and heatsinks
Worn fans and dust-packed heatsinks cause overtemperature trips, often only in summer or at full load.
Control and gate-drive boards
Faults in the control board, gate drivers or switched-mode supply show up as a dead keypad, communication loss, or random trips with no load-side cause.
Braking chopper and resistor
Overvoltage trips while stopping high-inertia loads point to a failed chopper transistor, an open braking resistor or a ramp set too short.
Power semiconductors
Power semiconductors usually fail because of something else: a short in the load, a cooling fault or a supply surge. The repair replaces the failed devices and checks the drive circuits that switch them.

What to check before calling an engineer
Isolate and lock out the supply, and wait for stored energy to discharge, before opening anything.

- Note the exact fault code and what the machine was doing when it tripped.
- Check that fans turn and that filters and heatsink fins are clear.
- Measure the incoming supply on all three phases.
- With the motor cable disconnected from the drive, have the motor insulation tested.

- Opening the drive or testing the power stage: the DC bus holds a lethal charge after switch-off.
- Replacing IGBT modules, capacitors or gate drivers.
- Reforming capacitors on a drive that has been in storage.
