Common faults
What usually fails on Stepper Motors & Drives
Lost steps and stalling
Weak drive current, a failing supply, mechanical binding or a worn motor.
Drive output stage failure
Shorted output transistors after a winding or cable fault.
Overheating
Motor current set too high, or drives without enough cooling.
Bearing wear and noise
Worn motor bearings cause noise, resonance and position errors.
Connector faults
Loose or corroded connectors give erratic movement.
First checks
What to check before calling an engineer
Isolate and lock out the supply, and wait for stored energy to discharge, before opening anything.
Safe for plant staff
- Check the mechanism turns freely by hand with power off.
- Check connectors and cables.
- Note the drive's alarm LED state.
Leave to a specialist
- Drive board repair.
- Setting current and microstepping to suit the load.
Warranty. Repairs carry a warranty of 30 days to 6 months, depending on the item and the repair; the exact term is confirmed before work starts.
