HMI screen blank, black or frozen?

Likely causes, what our technicians check onsite, and how to get it fixed — verified engineers across India, onsite in hours (under 4 in Hyderabad), 24/7.

01 / Overview

HMI Blank or Frozen Screen

A dead or frozen HMI doesn't always mean the machine is down — but it blinds the operator and often blocks the controls. The cause is usually one of a small set: backlight/display failure, a corrupted runtime project, a touch-digitiser fault, or lost communication with the PLC.

We repair and re-load HMI panels across Siemens Comfort/Basic, Allen-Bradley PanelView, Mitsubishi GOT, Schneider Magelis and Delta DOP — restoring the project from backup or recovering it, and fixing the display hardware itself.

02 / Diagnosis

Likely causes

The handful of things that actually cause this — in the order we rule them out.

DX_01

Backlight / display failure

A blank-but-powered panel (you can hear it boot, screen stays dark) is usually a failed backlight or display module — a hardware repair, not a software one.

DX_02

Corrupted runtime project

A power event or bad transfer corrupts the HMI application, leaving it frozen, erroring or stuck on boot. We restore from backup or recover and re-load the project.

DX_03

Touch-screen digitiser fault

The screen displays but doesn't respond, or registers phantom touches. The digitiser has failed or drifted and needs replacement or recalibration.

DX_04

PLC communication loss

The HMI shows a comms error or #### fields because the link to the PLC has dropped — a cable, a network fault or a changed PLC address, not the panel itself.

DX_05

Power / supply fault

A failed 24V supply or a blown internal fuse leaves the panel completely dead. We check supply before assuming the panel is faulty.

What our technician checks

A methodical path to root cause — not a scattergun of part swaps.

  1. 01Confirm panel power and internal supply/fuse
  2. 02Determine if it boots (backlight vs project vs comms)
  3. 03Test touch response and recalibrate the digitiser
  4. 04Check the PLC-HMI communication link and addressing
  5. 05Restore or recover the runtime project and back it up

Frequently asked questions

The HMI is black but I can hear the machine is still running. Is it serious?+
Often it's a failed backlight or display module — the panel is still working, you just can't see it, which is a straightforward hardware repair. We confirm it boots (versus a project or comms fault) and repair the display, ideally before it blinds the operator during a real fault.
Do I lose my HMI screens if the panel is replaced or repaired?+
Not if there's a backup — we restore the runtime project so the screens come back exactly as they were. If no backup exists we recover the project from the panel where possible and take a backup so it's never a problem again.
