Machine Losing Position / Homing Fault

A machine that won't home, loses its reference, or drifts off position between cycles has a feedback, reference-switch or compensation problem. It's disruptive and can be unsafe, but it's a well-bounded fault once you check the homing chain and the feedback in the right order.

We diagnose homing and position-loss faults on CNC, servo and motion systems — checking reference switches, absolute-encoder data, backlash and the homing sequence itself, and restoring reliable referencing.

Absolute-encoder data lost

A flat encoder-backup battery or a feedback fault loses absolute position, so the axis can't hold its reference across power cycles. We restore the data and fit a fresh battery.

Home / reference switch fault

A failed, misaligned or dirty home switch (or proximity sensor) makes the homing sequence fail or reference to the wrong point. Common and easily missed.

Feedback fault

A slipping coupling, a failing encoder or an intermittent feedback cable lets the axis lose count so real position no longer matches commanded position.

Backlash / mechanical slip

Worn ballscrew, a loose coupling or backlash lets the axis physically move without feedback registering it, so position drifts over cycles.

Wrong homing direction, speed or offset parameters after a reset or replacement make the machine reference incorrectly even when the hardware is fine.

The machine won't complete its homing sequence. What's wrong?+
A failed homing sequence is usually a home/reference switch that's dead, misaligned or dirty, or wrong homing parameters after a reset. We test and align the reference switch and verify the homing direction/offset — that resolves the large majority of homing faults.
The axis loses position between cycles even though nothing looks wrong. Why?+
That points at a feedback or mechanical-slip problem — a slipping coupling, an intermittent encoder/cable, or an absolute-encoder battery losing reference. We check the coupling, feedback and encoder battery, since a healthy-looking axis can still be losing count.
